Are you or a loved one among the millions of people each year that are affected by allergies or asthma? If so, you know just how frustrating and exhausting the battle can be. If you live in or around Atlanta, GA, then there is relief in sight. The Allergy & Asthma Center has been assisting patients for decades in identifying allergy issues and treating asthma for patients of all ages. What are some common allergies? What is asthma? What can I expect from the Allergy & Asthma Center?
An allergy occurs when our immune system reacts to a foreign substance such as pollen, grass, pet hair, or a food that does not cause an allergic reaction in the majority of people. Our immune system produces antibodies that identify a particular allergen as harmful even though it is not. As a result, when you or a loved one is exposed to the allergen, your immune system’s reaction can inflame your skin, sinuses, airways, or digestive system. Common allergies are hay fever, food allergies, an allergic reaction to an insect bite, or a drug allergy. At The Allergy & Asthma Center, our highly skilled and trained board-certified expert allergists are here to help identify the particular allergy you or your loved one is suffering from and help in getting you the right treatment to relieve your symptoms.
Food allergies commonly involve foods such as milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish, while skin allergies may be triggered by certain plants, fragrances, metals, or other substances that come into contact with the skin. Children may also experience allergies related to foods, pollen, dust mites, mold, or pets, which can contribute to symptoms such as sneezing, itching, rashes, digestive discomfort, or breathing difficulties. Because allergy symptoms can vary from mild to severe, proper evaluation and allergy testing can help determine specific triggers and guide an appropriate care plan for both children and adults.
If you or a loved one is experiencing asthma, it is due to the narrowing and swelling of your airways, along with the production of extra mucus. When this happens, your breathing becomes difficult, and it can trigger coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. There are varying degrees of asthma. Some people experience asthma as a minor health challenge. For other people, though, it can be a serious health challenge that interferes with normal day-to-day activities and, in some cases, can even be life-threatening. Asthma symptoms can change over time, so it is important to see an asthma specialist who can monitor your signs and symptoms and adjust treatments as needed. Our expert allergists and immunologists are here to treat and monitor any of your adult or pediatric asthma symptoms.
Asthma may be triggered or worsened by allergens, respiratory infections, exercise, cold air, smoke, environmental irritants, or changes in weather. Because triggers and symptoms can differ from one person to another, an individualized asthma management plan may include identifying triggers, monitoring breathing symptoms, and using prescribed medications appropriately. Regular evaluation can also help reduce flare-ups, improve symptom control, and support safer participation in everyday activities.
It can be tricky to tell the difference between seasonal allergies and a common cold because they share many similar symptoms, such as a runny nose, sneezing, and congestion. However, there are a few key indicators to help you distinguish between the two. Colds are caused by viruses and typically develop slowly over a few days. They often come with a low-grade fever, body aches, and thick, discolored nasal discharge, usually resolving within a week or two.
In contrast, seasonal allergies are an immune system response triggered by environmental factors like pollen or mold. Allergy symptoms tend to strike suddenly after exposure and can last for weeks or even months. Allergies also frequently cause itchy, watery eyes, which are rare with a cold. If your symptoms linger longer than ten days without improvement, it is time to consult our board-certified allergists for proper testing and a customized treatment plan.
Allergy shots, also known as subcutaneous immunotherapy, work much like a vaccine. Instead of treating just your symptoms, they target the root cause of your allergic reactions by gradually exposing your immune system to tiny, controlled amounts of the specific allergens that trigger your symptoms—such as pollen, dust mites, or indoor pet dander. Over time, your body gradually builds up a natural tolerance to these substances, meaning your immune system stops overreacting when you encounter them in your daily life.
This treatment process typically occurs in two distinct phases. The initial “build-up” phase involves receiving injections once or twice a week with gradually increasing doses. This phase usually lasts from three to six months. Afterward, you will enter the “maintenance” phase, where the time between shots increases to every two to four weeks. While some patients notice a reduction in their symptoms during the build-up phase, the most significant and lasting relief usually becomes apparent within the first year of maintenance therapy, ultimately reducing your reliance on daily allergy medications.
At The Allergy & Asthma Center, you and your loved ones can expect a team of board-certified allergists, Dr. Jon E. Stahlman, MD, and Dr. Deidre D. Crocker, MD, and certified nurse practitioners, Herchelle H. Cohen, A.P.R.N, and Danyelle Smith, A.P.R.N, who are here for you. We realize that when it comes to such unique issues as allergies and asthma, no two people are the same. We treat each patient individually by addressing your needs and concerns, or those of your loved ones, to achieve the best possible results. Our expert doctors will want to gather facts from you about when you experience these symptoms, exactly what symptoms you are dealing with, how long you have had this battle, and whether or not some activities or foods cause changes in your symptoms. Once you and your doctor have discussed at length your challenges, or those of your loved one, together you and your doctor will make a plan to address these individual needs.

Our board-certified allergists are here to help relieve that stress and anxiety by offering a wide range of services, including allergy & asthma treatment, food allergy, skin allergy, pediatric allergy, pediatric asthma, allergy shots, and allergy testing.
