Although we are specialized in both adults and children, The Allergy & Asthma Center physicians have completed special training to manage and treat infants and children with allergies. Pediatric allergists have completed at least four years of medical school, three years of pediatric residency training, and at least two or more years of an Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Program. Our physicians have attained board certification from the American Board of Pediatrics and from the American Board of Allergy and Immunology.

Allergies occur when children’s immune systems overreact to environmental allergens, medication and food that are typically harmless to a normal immune system. This reaction may cause the child to develop seasonal allergies, sinus infections, asthma, hives, eczema (a rash), or severe reactions to foods or insects.

Pediatric allergists are skilled in obtaining important clinical information from young children and their parents. Children with allergies often have anxiety, sadness, sleeping difficulties, and may even have academic trouble at school. The parents of a child with allergies may also struggle with similar symptoms. Many parents find it reassuring that pediatric allergists are experienced with the psychological and physical effects of allergy in the child and the family.

Pediatric allergists help diagnose allergic conditions by special testing. The testing for food, penicillin, and environmental allergies may be done by skin prick testing or blood work. Patch testing helps evaluate for possible contact dermatitis, which is a rash that occurs after exposure to a chemical. Spirometry helps evaluate lung function to determine whether or not a child has asthma. Treatment may combine avoiding things that cause symptoms, immunotherapy (allergy shots), or medication. Pediatric allergists have unique skills to help children with food allergies. Using the latest research as well as testing usually performed in the office they can help determine when an oral food challenge can be performed in a child that has most likely outgrown their sensitivity.

Pediatric allergists are skilled in identifying the cause of allergic disorders in your child, and to offer ways to decrease symptoms so that your child can live a healthier life. We keep up to date with the latest diagnostic tools and therapies that are appropriate to help evaluate, treat, and manage childhood allergies. Make your child’s appointment today!
