How do I know if I am allergic to something?

If you have a severe reaction to an allergen, chances are you are allergic to it. Those allergies are easy to identify. Less clear are things that only give you a mild reaction or the reaction is delayed. In those cases, you might not even realize you are allergic to something, or you may keep blaming it on something else — the solution: Allergy Testing. At The Allergy & Asthma Center, we can test you for a variety of allergies. We often recommend checking a variety of allergens to catch any you may not be aware of.

What kind of allergy testing is available at your location?

We have a few ways to test you for allergies at The Allergy & Asthma Center. The most common test involves exposing your skin to a small amount of allergen related to the allergy we are investigating. The Skin prick test is the most common test we administer. With this method, we prick your skin with the allergen and look for a reaction, which resembles a bug bite. This test, in many cases, is the only one we need to verify an allergy. When skin prick tests do not give a clear result, we also have intradermal tests and blood tests available. These methods can be more expensive and uncomfortable, so they are usually not our first choices. Finally, we also employ challenge testing and patch testing. Depending on the allergy we are testing, these tests can help eliminate possible allergies when a patient isn’t exactly sure what they are allergic to.

What should I bring with me when I am visiting with an allergist for the first time?

When you visit The Allergy & Asthma Center for the first time to meet with one of our great allergists, you should bring your medical history, any medications you may be on, and, if possible, a detailed account of the allergies you are experiencing. Before your visit, try to take notes when your allergic reaction. Some useful information for our allergists would be:

– What were you exposed to before your allergy appeared?
– How much time elapsed between that exposure and your symptoms?
– How long did the allergic reaction last?
– What makes your symptoms better/worse?

We may ask you to keep a diary of your actions, the food you eat, and where you go, as well as documenting your allergic reactions. This information may be helpful for us to pinpoint vague allergies, so we can help treat you.

Can you cure my allergy?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for allergies. However, we can help you manage your symptoms with allergy shots. This treatment exposes your body to tiny amounts of allergen to trigger a small allergic reaction. Allergic reactions occur when your immune system overreacts to a specific allergen. By exposing your body to tiny amounts, we train your immune system to become used to that exposure. Over time, and by increasing the amounts of allergen you are exposed to, you should hopefully experience less and less severe symptoms. This treatment often takes months, if not years, to get you to result you want. However, if completed successfully, it can blunt severe allergy symptoms and, in some cases, make them vanish altogether.
