Valentine’s Day and Food Allergies at School

Valentine’s Day is here. While your child exchanging Valentines with friends is fun, those with food allergies have to be careful when candy and food treats are involved. It is important to make sure your child is fully aware of their allergies and create a plan with them to safely participate in Valentine’s Day celebrations. Your child’s teacher should also be familiar with your child’s allergies. They can help your kid read ingredients on labels and prevent accidents. However, it is helpful to reinforce the importance of declining any potentially unsafe treats with your food allergic child. While food free fun is preferred at school celebrations, we hope to make things safer for patients with a list of allergy friendly treats:

  1. Surf Sweets – Free of peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, egg, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, sesame, sulfites and gluten.
  2. Dum Dums – Free of peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, egg, wheat, fish and shellfish.
  3. Gimbal’s Cinnamon Lovers – Free of peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, egg, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish and gluten.
  4. Amanda’s Own – Free of peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, egg, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish and gluten.
  5. Jelly Belly – Free of dairy, egg, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish. Peanut and tree nut free, but are produced in facilities that occasionally process these allergens.
  6. Mike and Ike – Free of peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, egg, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish.
  7. Pez – Free of peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, egg, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish and gluten.
  8. No Whey! Foods – Free of peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, egg, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish and gluten.
